When you hear the words "filter press," I would bet that many people think of a traditional sidebar filter press. However, these are not the only types of filter presses on the market. There are also overhead filter presses where hangers suspend the filter plates from an overhead beam rather than supported by the sides of the press frame.

Here are 5 of the questions that our dewatering experts get asked most often about our overhead filter presses:

1. What are some of the key features unique to the J-Press® overhead filter press?

Well, there are a few. However, the primary ones are:

  • A more robust, heavy-duty frame construction than sidebar presses.
  • Overhead plate shifting, which helps cut down on cake contamination of shifter components.
  • The choice between an overhead compression close and overhead tension close.
  • The plates shift using an Automatic Variable Speed Shifter

2. How does the Automatic Variable Speed Shifter work?

In this particular system, only one filter plate is moved at a time (as shown in the illustration above). This allows the press operator to have more precise control of the press cycle and speed. A high degree of control helps make the cake discharge cycle more efficient and helps prevent any accidental or out of sequence cake discharge.

3. Can you use different types of filter plates and cloths with this press?

Yes. In the overhead filter presses you can use whichever type of filter cloth and plate is best for your dewatering process. Some standard filter packs include:

  • Non-Gasketed
  • Gasketed
  • SRRM
  • Diaphragm
  • Diaphragm Squeeze Manifold

The design of overhead filter presses makes the filter cloths easily accessible for changing and cleaning.

4. Do the presses come in different sizes or styles?

Our J-Press® overhead filter presses are available in two different frame designs with plate sizes ranging from 1.2 m x 1.2 m to 2.0 m x 2.0 m.

5. Can the press be expanded?

Yes. As with our sidebar filter presses, the J-Press® overhead filter press can be expanded to include additional filter plates as your dewatering needs change and increase.
