Filter Presses in the Pulp and Paper Industry

In the United States (and many other countries) the pulp and paper industry is one of the most water intensive industries. The industry uses so much of this particular resource because water is needed in almost every step of the production process. According to WaterWorld, many facilities require up to 54 cubic meters of water to produce just one metric ton of finished product.

Where can filter presses help?

In recent years, as a result of this extreme water use, there has been more pressure put on production facilities to reclaim more water and reuse it within the facility. However, by the end of the production process the wastewater contains:

  • boiler and furnace ash
  • scrubber sludge
  • lime mud
  • wood residuals
  • other solids

The wastewater must be heavily treated and filtered before it can be reused and recycled, and that's where filter presses come in.

The benefits of a filter press are two-fold, they reclaim water and they help with sludge disposal (which is great since sludge is the largest waste stream produced by the industry). By compacting the sludge into filter cakes, your facility can save money on sludge disposal costs.

Features of Evoqua's J-Press® filter presses

As previously mentioned, the slurry that results at the end of the paper industry is full of corrosive chemicals and solids. It is also very hot and has an extremely high pH level. So any equipment that is used to treat it needs to be able to stand up to these extremes. Our J-Press® filter presses are up to the challenge.

Our press frames are made of heavy duty carbon steel plate and parts made of either; polypropylene with PVC, carbon steel or stainless steel piping manifold. These sturdy materials ensure that the presses will be resistant to corrosion and performing at peak levels for many, many years.

These are just a few of the features that make our filter presses a great addition to any dewatering process. Want to learn more about these sturdy and versatile pieces of equipment? Download our guide!
