In the United States (and many other countries) the pulp and paper industry is one of the most water intensive industries. The industry uses so much of this particular resource because water is needed in almost every step of the production process. According to WaterWorld, many facilities require up to 54 cubic meters of water to produce just one metric ton of finished product.
Where can filter presses help?
In recent years, as a result of this extreme water use, there has been more pressure put on production facilities to reclaim more water and reuse it within the facility. However, by the end of the production process the wastewater contains:
boiler and furnace ash
The wastewater must be heavily treated and filtered before it can be reused and recycled, and that's where filter presses come in.
The benefits of a filter press are two-fold, they reclaim water and they help with sludge disposal (which is great since sludge is the largest waste stream produced by the industry). By compacting the sludge into filter cakes, your facility can save money on sludge disposal costs.
