Weekly Intake: A Water Intake Systems Blog

Leading the Way in Traveling Water Screen Innovation

By Michael Stock

Innovation. It's a crucial part of making sure that our customers have access to the best products and services possible. At Evoqua, we are committed to innovation and setting the bar for the next generation of industry standards; so committed that we have more than 1500 granted or pending patents.

One of the innovations in the intake world that we are most proud of is the fish friendly, Smooth-tex® flat wire mesh used in the baskets of our traveling water screens.

The tides have been turning...

The world of raw water intake has been changing rapidly in recent years with the passage of Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act, which places regulations on facilities that withdraw at least 2 million gallons per day from nearby water sources (25% of which is used only for cooling purposes). The regulations it imposes that are meant to "reduce impingement and entrainment of fish and other aquatic organisms".

New challenges are how many great ideas and products come to be, including Smooth-tex® flat wire mesh; which is considered a BTA (best technology available) to comply with Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act.

So, what sets Smooth-tex® flat wire mesh (a registered trademark of our sister brand Envirex) apart from all of the other types of mesh on the market?

Two things - the structure and how the mesh is manufactured. In Smooth-tex® flat wire mesh, the wires are bent and flattened so they are all on the same "smooth" plane. Other, more traditional, types of mesh are woven like a basket and the face of the wires are in different planes. These rigid wires can be extremely dangerous for the fish that come into contact with them, slicing off their scales.

The Smooth-tex® mesh also has rectangular openings. The longer, vertical openings mean there are fewer horizontal cross wires, which is safer for the fish that come into contact with the screen.

Smooth-tex® mesh is just one of the many innovative features of our Modified Ristroph traveling water screens. If you interested in learning more about our screens, we have just the thing for you!
